Faith on the Bench

Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father.  – Matthew 13:43

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas loves the law, but he also values his faith. During his thirties, Thomas suffered from hardship and felt that his life was hopeless. But he found solace in the church, where he was able to be at one with God and pray for healing.

“Within those walls, with God’s help and grace, I was able to elevate my thoughts beyond my circumstances and self-absorption, and set my mind on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. God used those times of prayer and meditation to rekindle the flame of faith in my life. I am a changed man today and God began that transformation in a holy place, a sanctuary.”

From the lofty bench of the High Court, he faithfully votes in favor of religious freedom, biblical marriage, and the sanctity of human life. Recently when the Supreme Court released an opinion that struck down the Louisiana state law known as the “Unsafe Abortion Protection Act,” Justice Thomas was the only one to file a strong dissent in which he argued that the abortion decisions were not supported by the Constitution. Thomas also stated that the Court’s abortion decisions are “a creation that should be undone” and that Roe v. Wade “is grievously wrong for many reasons.”

When you placed your faith in Christ, you received a new nature. You are fashioned in the Creator’s likeness—righteous, holy, and true. So as you spend time in prayer and in His Word, submit your will to the Holy Spirit moment by moment, depending on Him to empower you. Pray that America’s judges will do the same.

Today’s Verse: Matthew 13:43

Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him hear.

20 But that is not the way you learned Christ! — 21 assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus, 22 to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, 23 and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, 24 and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.

25 Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another. 26 Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, 27 and give no opportunity to the devil. 28 Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need. 29 Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. 32 Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.
