Victory

And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. – 1 John 5:4

Think about the excitement of football players and fans after a Super Bowl victory. Nothing seems sweeter than that. But the Lord Jesus has given believers something better—victory that has overcome the world. But what does that mean on a practical level?

The first is victory over death. No enemy, spiritual or physical, can rob a believer in Jesus of eternal life (John 3:16). The second is victory over sin. His grace enables the believer to live a life that is pleasing to God (Titus 2:11-14). And if the believer does sin and confesses it, the Father forgives and cleanses (1 John 1:9). Thirdly, He has given victory over anything that trips you up in your spiritual journey: fear, anxiety, hate, unforgiveness, bitterness, depression.  Jesus is your hope in all of these situations.

Study His Word and renew your mind as it says in Romans 12:2, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” Look at your trials and challenges as opportunities to apply your faith in Jesus and in His word. Are you dealing with fear? Look up the many verses in the Bible that use the term “fear not” and meditate on them. As you renew your mind, your faith, boldness and peace will grow in the Lord Jesus. As you pray, intercede for the nation’s citizens and leaders to turn to the Lord and cast all their cares on Him.

Today’s Verse: 1 John 5:4

For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.

Blessed are those whose way is blameless,
    who walk in the law of the Lord!
Blessed are those who keep his testimonies,
    who seek him with their whole heart,
who also do no wrong,
    but walk in his ways!
You have commanded your precepts
    to be kept diligently.
Oh that my ways may be steadfast
    in keeping your statutes!
Then I shall not be put to shame,
    having my eyes fixed on all your commandments.
I will praise you with an upright heart,
    when I learn your righteous rules.
I will keep your statutes;
    do not utterly forsake me!

How can a young man keep his way pure?
    By guarding it according to your word.
10 With my whole heart I seek you;
    let me not wander from your commandments!
11 I have stored up your word in my heart,
    that I might not sin against you.
