Be Wary of Labels

Don’t let God’s truth get lost in the noise.

Isaiah 5:20 – Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter.

Political labels are confusing—and they are everywhere. Even Christians get confused on what is pure right and pure wrong because of the current climate and flood of lies being spread by news sources of every stripe. But remember, in 1 Corinthians 14:33, you hear, “For God is not a God of confusion but of peace.”

Not so long ago, before you began relying on the global positioning system (GPS) in your car or on your smart phone, finding an address in an area unfamiliar could be quite confusing.  You might drive around and miss an expressway exit, you might wind up in a neighborhood you knew was all wrong. Soon you would start seeing the same landmarks that were there before, and you finally found someone to ask—you needed directions.

Today, people are going in ideological circles, identifying falsely a direction they thought was right only to find that the value system underlying it was wrong. If there is confusion in your own mind, seek out the Holy Spirit for directions. He might lead you to a more spiritually-mature Christian with a broader understanding of God’s Word, or He might have you search the scriptures for yourself.

In God, there is no double standard. His truths are absolute. He has given you a sound mind and His Word as a filter. Discard labels.  Don’t be deceived by misrepresentations. Do not be driven in circles by emotions. Follow righteousness, and you will spot the lies of those who would tell you that evil is good and good evil.

Pray With Us

Dear Lord, draw me nearer to You. Create in me an insatiable thirst for Your Word. Immerse me in Your truth until I can recognize the horrendous propaganda being spewed across the television and social media, the repeated lies, the deception, and even the disinformation of misguided friends.  Give me the courage to call evil what it is, to shine like where darkness has concealed the truth, and let me have enough of You that I keep my words sweet as I do it. Thank You for direction from Your Holy Spirit,

Amen.
