Steve Scalise U.S. Representative for Louisiana

Steve Scalise

U.S. Representative for Louisiana

Stephen Joseph Scalise was born in October 1965 in New Orleans, Louisiana. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge with a major in computer science and a minor in political science.

He served twelve years in the Louisiana House of Representatives and was later elected to the Louisiana Senate. His time there was cut short when he was elected in a special run-off election to a seat in the United States House of Representatives, where he has served since 2008.

In 2017, while practicing for the annual Congressional baseball game, Scalise and three other people were shot and wounded by an activist with a record of violence. Despite being shot in the hip, Scalise crawled into right field, bleeding profusely. He fell unconscious and went into shock while being taken to the hospital where he was diagnosed in critical condition. He underwent immediate surgery, and doctors said he presented “with an imminent risk of death.” The single rifle bullet had traveled across his pelvis, fracturing bones, injuring internal organs and causing severe bleeding. He was beginning an extended period of healing and rehabilitation when he was returned to intensive care after becoming ill with an infection related to the shooting.  Additional surgeries and rehabilitation procedures were required. At the end of September, he returned to the House of Representatives where he received applause and cheers.

He is married to Jennifer Ann Letulle and they have two children. He is a Roman Catholic.

In the News…

The Paycheck Protection Program improvement bill signed Friday by the president will help many of America’s small businesses come back more fully after coronavirus shutdowns forced them to close their doors earlier this year, said House Minority Whip Steve Scalise.

“We’re still working on the two-plus trillion dollars already out there, making sure it works,” Scalise said in an interview. The Louisiana representative also commented on reports that the Trump Administration is eyeing a $1 trillion stimulus package for the next round of economic relief, including money for America’s infrastructure.

“We also know that we are starting to see businesses come back. That is where our focus needs to be. It is helping them come out of this to bring jobs back, restore the American dream lost for so many people.”
