Taste Test

O taste and see that the Lord is good! – Psalm 34:8

Among your five senses, taste is powerful. You can tell without seeing it, whether you are having a meal “fit for a king” or something recovered from dumpster diving; you know without hearing its sizzle, that the steak is  moist and to your liking; without smelling it, you know what you need to about cauliflower when it enters your mouth. And regardless of whether your pasta is al dente or close to mush, you still enjoy its taste.

So how do you “taste” the Lord? Through His Word. King David called it “honey” (Psalm 119:103);  the writer of Hebrews says it is good and a “heavenly gift (Hebrews 6:4-5); Peter says it is kindness (1 Peter 2:3}.   And Jeremiah says they are a joy and delight (Jeremiah 15:16).  When he was tempted, Jesus quoted Deuteronomy 8:3, where it says, “Man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.”

For good health, you must have good food and in adequate amounts. For your spiritual health, you need a diet rich in the Word of God. Desire that pure milk of the Word (1 Peter 2:2). Be nourished in your soul. Thank the Lord for the goodness, the sweetness, the joy and the delights of His glorious Word. Pray that more people in America would find solace in it, and that the nation’s leaders would secure its wisdom.

97 Oh how I love your law!
It is my meditation all the day.
98 Your commandment makes me wiser than my enemies,
for it is ever with me.
99 I have more understanding than all my teachers,
for your testimonies are my meditation.
100 I understand more than the aged,
    for I keep your precepts.
101 I hold back my feet from every evil way,
in order to keep your word.
102 I do not turn aside from your rules,
    for you have taught me.
103 How sweet are your words to my taste,
sweeter than honey to my mouth!
104 Through your precepts I get understanding;
therefore I hate every false way.
