Pandemic of Fear

1 John 4:4 – The one who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.

Robert Shiller is a Nobel-prize winning economist and professor of Economics at Yale University. He is an expert in how our emotions drive financial decisions, and he has warned that a pandemic greater than the one created by the coronavirus could overtake the nation, and indeed the world. That would be the “pandemic of fear.” His message was one of doom, gloom and deep depression.

If anyone doubts that the Earth is in the midst of spiritual warfare, listen to the words of John:

Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God; for many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already. Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. They are from the world; therefore they speak from the world and the world listens to them. We are from God. Whoever knows God listens to us; whoever is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know the Spirit of truth and the spirit of error (1 John 4:1-6).

King Solomon loved the Lord and walked in His statutes. On becoming king, he asked of the Lord to be given a discerning spirit, and it was given to him. Through this passage in 1 John, you can have confidence that God will give you a spirit of discernment also—you need but ask. To avoid the treachery of the world today, you will need the Lord as your daily guide.

Pray With Us

Gracious and Merciful God, I am not in a kingly position as Solomon was. My circle of influence could be small. Nevertheless, I ask that You help me discern truth from error in what I hear from the news each day.  I need a spiritual vaccine of Your grace to inoculate me against the pandemic of fear. I desire to walk in faithfulness, righteousness, and uprightness of heart before you. Accomplishing this requires my nearness to You, and a keen understanding. Tune my heart to Your plan in these days. Remind me of Your great power and strength. I love you, Lord God. Thank you for answering my prayer, in Jesus Name,

Amen.
