Acting Navy Secretary Thomas Modly submitted his resignation just days after he dismissed the captain of the USS Theodore Roosevelt. Captain Crozier had gone outside channels with a letter requesting assistance in the face of increasing coronavirus cases.
In a speech to the crew of the ship, the acting secretary expressed a harsh opinion of the captain’s decision to break protocol and chain of command. The audio of Modly’s impassioned speech garnered tremendous criticism from the media and politicians. His resignation was tendered the following day.
Secretary Esper is urging the U.S. Senate to quickly confirm Kenneth Braithwaite, the ambassador to Norway, to bring stability to the naval branch of the armed forces.
