Coronavirus Task Force Sunday Briefing

Details the actions taken by the federal government over the weekend.

On Sunday, President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence gave an update on the recent developments concerning the COVID-19 outbreak and response.

The president began by announcing that, in working with the Federal Reserve, rates were drastically reduced order to protect economic stability. This action was taking to reduce stresses on financial markets and to give a boost to the economy.

Additionally, at the behest of various grocery store executives, the president urged Americans to slow down on buying supplies, “There’s no need for anybody in the country to hoard essential food supplies.” He said that there would be enough to continue to fill the shelves, but that the sudden demand is making it logistically difficult to get basic necessities from warehouses to store shelves as rapidly as they are being depleted. Because there is an abundance of supplies, the president said that rapid buying is unnecessary at this time.

The vice president gave an update on the spread of the virus saying that there are “more than 2,900 cases of coronavirus in 49 states across the country.” He added, ” I want to assure the American people that this administration, all of our partners at the state level, and local health officials have no higher priority than the health and safety of the American public.”

The vice president also updated the nation on the federal and state efforts to get testing kits into the hands of local agencies.

Others who gave updates and included U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps Admiral Brett Giroir, White House Coronavirus (COVID-19) Response Coordinator Deborah L. Birx, and National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director Anthony S. Fauci, Homeland Security Acting Secretary Chad Wolf,
