Fix Wandering Minds

“May my meditation be pleasing to him.” – Psalm 104:34

Today is Valentine’s Day—a time to celebrate romance. Saint Valentine, for whom the holiday is named, was executed for marrying Christian couples when it was against the law under the Roman Emperor Claudius II. The last note the saint wrote to a young woman whom he had healed of blindness signed “from your Valentine” was a predecessor of Valentine cards people send today. However, when romance is in the air, temptations may be present, too. Today’s verse talks about the importance of meditation being pleasing to God. Sometimes it’s easy to let your mind wander off into forbidden territory. What do you meditate on? Scripture, TV, Social media?

Even without temptations of media prevalent today, David had his problems with his mind, when his eyes wandered to Bathsheba’s rooftop. It led to adultery, murder, a stern rebuke from a prophet, and David and Bathsheba’s child dying. This Bible story reminds believers to pay attention to Paul when he says, “Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think on these things” (Philippians 4:8).

Entertainment is fine and good, but if you find your mind wandering to where it ought not go, it’s time to turn off the TV and meditate on the Scripture, listen to a sermon, or turn to Christian novels or shows. May your meditations be pleasing to God. Pray for this country’s leaders and the media to be more godly in its impact.

Today’s Verse: Psalm 104:34

May my meditation be pleasing to him,
for I rejoice in the Lord.

There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot. Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. 10 But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.
