Over thirty nations express concerns over the “alarming deterioration” in Sudan’s food security.
The U.S. State Department released a joint statement from the European Commissioner for Equality, Preparedness and Crisis Management along with more than thirty nations regarding the risk of famine in Sudan.
The joint statement said, “Sudan is experiencing an alarming deterioration in its food security. The risk of famine in the coming months, as warned by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification, needs urgent action. There is no time to lose to save lives and prevent famine.” The estimate is that at least 40 percent of the Sudanese population is experiencing “high levels of food insecurity.”
The statement continued, “Conflict is the key driver of Sudan’s hunger crisis, displacing millions of people, damaging critical infrastructure and disrupting healthcare provision, food production, supply chains and markets.” Humanitarian aid efforts have also been obstructed as drought has increased.
The joint statement highlighted, “The parties to the conflict bear primary responsibility for alleviating the suffering of the Sudanese people. We urge the parties to lift all impediments on humanitarian assistance, allow and facilitate full, safe, rapid, and unimpeded humanitarian access, and protect humanitarian personnel. Left unchecked, these impediments will hamper the ability of the humanitarian response to address famine risk.”
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For officials in the State Department as they work with counterparts to provide humanitarian aid to Sudan.
- For wisdom for the president and members of his administration as they seek to assist in averting the famine.
