Increasing Brightness

The path of the righteous is like the light of dawn, which shines brighter and brighter until full day. Proverbs 4:18

A characteristic of old fluorescent light bulbs was that when you turned them on, they would gradually build up to the brightness they were meant to emit. God’s sunrise, which happens every morning (whether or not you can see it), is far more reliable, beginning with just a glimmer, then proceeding to grow brighter and brighter until the light hits its peak intensity with the noonday sun.

Equally exciting and beautiful is the dawning understanding that comes to a person as he or she goes from initially learning about Christ to actually believing, receiving, and loving the Word of God and the Lord as Savior. Jesus is the light (John 8:12)! As a believer begins to study Scripture, the Holy Spirit illuminates more and more the meaning of God’s Word. It is similar to a budding rose, tightly closed but opening to reveal the most beautiful flower. The difference is that the Bible never turns brown or loses its petals. God’s Word is fresh every day!

In these days of uncertainty, when many are fearful, when tensions rise as politicians are pitted against each other, intentionally immerse yourself in Scripture. The psalmist wrote, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (Psalm 119:105). Spending time with the Lord brings you knowledge, peace, and joy, and you will increasingly discover His purpose for your life. “The Lord is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him” (Lamentations 3:25). As you learn His truth, you may better evaluate the words of those who campaign to lead this country.

Stay constant in God’s Word. Be steadfast in prayer for yourself and this nation.

Today’s Verse: Proverbs 4:18

13 Keep hold of instruction; do not let go;
    guard her, for she is your life.
14 Do not enter the path of the wicked,
    and do not walk in the way of the evil.
15 Avoid it; do not go on it;
    turn away from it and pass on.
16 For they cannot sleep unless they have done wrong;
    they are robbed of sleep unless they have made someone stumble.
17 For they eat the bread of wickedness
    and drink the wine of violence.
18 But the path of the righteous is like the light of dawn,
    which shines brighter and brighter until full day.

23 Keep your heart with all vigilance,
    for from it flow the springs of life.
24 Put away from you crooked speech,
    and put devious talk far from you.
25 Let your eyes look directly forward,
    and your gaze be straight before you.
26 Ponder the path of your feet;
    then all your ways will be sure.
27 Do not swerve to the right or to the left;
    turn your foot away from evil.
