White House Announces Continuation of Chinese Student Visa Policy

Official clarifies President Trump’s earlier comment, 600,000 visas will be granted over two years.

The White House clarified President Donald Trump’s statement earlier in the week regarding the number of student visas the U.S. would grant Chinese college students, saying that it was continuing the current policy. The president seemed to indicate that 600,000 student visas would be given, more than double the current 270,000 Chinese students enrolled in U.S. colleges.

President Trump said, “We’re going to allow their students to come in. It’s very important, 600,000 students. It’s very important. But we’re going to get along with China.”

A White House spokesperson stated, “President Trump isn’t proposing an increase in student visas for Chinese students. The 600k references two years’ worth of visas. It’s simply a continuation of existing policy.”

However, in May, the State Department announced that the president planned to revoke student visas for Chinese nationals, especially for younger college students. Secretary of State Marco Rubio had said that his department would work with Homeland Security to revoke visas “including those with connections to the Chinese Communist Party or studying in critical fields.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For the Lord to guide President Trump in his policies regarding China and Chinese students.
  • For Secretary Rubio and officials in the State Department as they oversee the review of visa applicants.
