President Proposes Tariff Increase over Foreign Taxes on U.S. Tech Companies

He called the taxation of companies like Google and Meta “discriminatory actions.”

President Donald Trump warned that he would impose new tariffs against countries that tax or regulate tech companies based in the United States, calling any attempts to do so “discriminatory actions”.

President Trump stated, “I put all Countries with Digital Taxes, Legislation, Rules, or Regulations, on notice that unless these discriminatory actions are removed, I, as President of the United States, will impose substantial additional Tariffs on that Country’s Exports to the U.S.A., and institute Export restrictions on our Highly Protected Technology and Chips.”

Countries and international organizations, like the European Union (EU) and Canada, have repeatedly proposed regulations and taxes for tech firms and online platforms, the majority of which are based in the U.S. In negotiating previous tariffs with the EU, President Trump’s administration has repeatedly called for tax exemptions for companies such as Meta and Google, but a final agreement was not reached before the tariffs were enacted.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For discernment for President Trump as he continues to use tariffs for economic leverage with other countries.
  • For the president and his economic advisors as they craft policies regarding technology and innovation.
