Defense Secretary Authorizes Option for National Guard to Carry Weapons in D.C.

The move comes as the crime debate intensifies and officials weigh expanded roles for mobilized troops.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has authorized National Guard troops deployed in Washington, D.C., to carry weapons if their mission requires it, according to a memo sent to the National Guard Bureau chief and the Secretary of the Army. Officials said no order to arm troops has been issued, but the decision could allow about 2,000 personnel—who have been working unarmed in low-crime areas—to conduct security patrols in neighborhoods with higher crime rates. If implemented, Guard members would likely carry sidearms rather than long guns, though they would still lack law enforcement authority.

The authorization follows President Donald Trump’s statement suggesting a larger Guard role in city security and warning of a possible federal takeover, citing concerns about crime data.

Roughly 800 local Guard members and 1,200 from several states have been mobilized.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Secretary Hegseth to receive God’s guidance as he oversees the deployment of National Guard troops to support law enforcement efforts.
  • For wisdom for President Trump as he seeks to improve public safety and reduce crime.
  • For members of Congress as they consider the extension of federal control of the District of Columbia’s police force.
