President Trump paused the trilateral meeting with Ukraine and European leaders to call President Putin.
President Donald Trump announced that Presidents Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky would be meeting with each other soon, and that President Trump will participate in a trilateral meeting thereafter. During peace talks at the White House with Ukrainian President Zelensky and European leaders on Monday, President Trump paused the discussion to directly call President Putin.
President Trump hailed the progress, stating, “This was a very good, early step for a War that has been going on for almost four years.”
“I think that we had a very good conversation with President Trump…it was really good,” President Zelensky told European leaders during a multilateral meeting later on Monday afternoon. “We spoke about very sensitive points.”
The historic multilateral meeting included Finnish President Alexander Stubb, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
President Putin had proposed bypassing a ceasefire and simply crafting a peace agreement on Friday. Some of the European leaders insisted that a ceasefire must come first.
“All of us would obviously prefer an immediate ceasefire while we work on a lasting peace,” President Trump told the leaders. “Maybe something like that could happen. As of this moment it’s not happening, but President Zelensky and President Putin can talk a little bit more about that.”
“In the six or so wars that we’ve stopped, we haven’t had a ceasefire,” he added. “So I don’t know that it’s necessary, you can do it through the war. But I like the ceasefire from another standpoint – you immediately stop the killing. But I believe a peace agreement at the end of all of this is something that’s very attainable. And it can be done in the near future.”
