Sanctuary Sheriff in Boston Indicted for Extortion by Federal Grand Jury

He leveraged his position to purchase stock in a cannabis company.

A federal grand jury indicted a county sheriff for extorting thousands of dollars through the purchase of stock in a Boston-based cannabis company.

Sheriff Steven W. Tompkins was indicted on two counts of Extortion Under Color of Official Right, a crime in which he used his position as a sheriff to force the company owner to pay him more than his stock in the company was worth. He has yet to be sentenced, but he faces up to 20 years in prison for each criminal count.

“Elected officials, particularly those in law enforcement, are expected to be ethical, honest, and law abiding – not self-serving,” said U.S. Attorney Leah Foley. “Public corruption remains a top priority for my administration and we will continue to investigate and prosecute anyone who uses their position of trust and power for their own gain.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Justice Department officials as they seek to hold public servants accountable for corruption.
  • For wisdom for Attorney General Bondi and U.S. attorneys as they prosecute criminal cases.
  • For the former sheriff to seek the Lord as he receives and serves his sentence.
