The agency says a fake police officer threatens targets at U.S. universities with arrest for financial fraud.
Officials from the Philadelphia office of the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) warned international college students of an ongoing scam tactic against them, issuing an advisory this week urging potential victims to report these scams to the FBI.
This new scam tactic targets Chinese students by impersonating Chinese police officers who tell them they are under investigation in China for a fake financial crime. The scammers will then direct victims to pay a fee in order to avoid arrest.
“Criminal actors direct victims to consent to 24/7 video and audio monitoring due to the alleged sensitivity of the investigation and/or to demonstrate the victims’ innocence,” the FBI’s Philadelphia field office stated.
The advisory explained that the impersonator instructs victims “not to discuss the details of the case, not to conduct Internet searches, and to report all their daily activities.”
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For Director Patel to be led by the Lord as he manages the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
- For FBI officials as they seek to apprehend the impersonator who has victimized Chinese students at U.S. universities.
