Simple Majority Rulings on Nominees Hit Roadblocks

“I just generally don’t go nuclear,” Senator Tillis said of the tactic to bypass stalled nominations.

Senator Thom Tillis said he would not support a shift to a simple-majority vote to speed up the confirmation process for 160 pending presidential administration nominees.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune is exploring a number of moves to speed along President Donald Trump’s leadership nominees, one of which is adjusting the supermajority vote requirement, a minimum of 67 votes to approve federal nominees, to a simple majority of greater than 50 votes. This would allow Republicans to approve the 160 nominees without additional votes.

But Senator Tillis, along with a few other legislators, gave public statements denouncing this idea. “I just generally don’t go nuclear,” Senator Tillis told reporters on Thursday. He argued that “if we do this, then that means the new bar for rules [changes] is a simple majority,” explaining that other supermajority vote requirements could be overturned as well.

Senator Susan Collins also sounded leery about changing the rules for processing lower-level nominees through a partisan vote.m “We clearly have a huge problem with bipartisan nominees requiring roll call votes, but I want to see what the exact proposals [for policy changes] are,” she said.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For legislators as they empower the decisions of the presidential administration.
  • That U.S. senators remain committed to reflecting the will of their constituents.
  • That the Lord guides Congress as they shapes the policies of the federal government.
