DHS Inspector General Confirms Around 300,000 Migrant Children Missing

He testified to a House subcommittee that the government lacked personnel to track sponsors and addresses.

Department of Homeland Security Inspector General Joseph Cuffari testified before the House Subcommittee on Federal Law Enforcement last week. He shared that, of the 448,000 unaccompanied migrant children who entered the U.S. illegally and were transferred from the Department of Homeland Security to the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Refugee Resettlement Services, around 300,000 unaccompanied children had not appeared at their immigration court proceedings as of last September. Nearly 58,000 of that number are under the age of 12.

“Our review found that DHS lacked the ability to monitor or reliably determine the location of unaccompanied children after transfer to HHS,” Inspector General Cuffari said. “As a result, children have been released into situations where they are unaccounted for or placed at risk,” which he testified included labor exploitation and human trafficking.

The Department of Health and Human Services reported that President Trump’s administration has located over 13,000 migrant children. Hundreds of sponsors have been arrested for abusing the minors in their custody. The president’s administration is giving unaccompanied minors the option to self-deport back to their homeland’s to rejoin their families.

DHS Spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin said, “The safety of children and ensuring they are reunited with their parents or safe guardian is [the] top priority of the Trump Administration.“

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For DHS Secretary Kristi Noem as she oversees the efforts to locate and rescue at risk unaccompanied minors.
  • For Inspector General Cuffari as he reviews information on the number of missing migrant children allowed into the U.S. in recent years.
