“Grok for Government” AI tools will be available across the Defense Department.
The Department of Defense (DoD) finalized a $200 million contract to integrate Grok, the AI chatbot developed by Elon Musk’s company xAI, into its agencies and organizations. The contract, called “Grok for Government,” pays xAI to modify Grok for use within classified contexts, which will then be available for other federal agencies to purchase through the General Services Administration (GSA).
Grok has experienced controversies since its introduction to the U.S. market earlier this year. After being released for use on the social media platform X, it generated responses that supported the work of Adolf Hitler and other antisemitic rhetoric. Its Memphis-based data center also uses gas-powered turbines to operate, emitting airborne pollutants that are being challenged by in court.
xAI did not address these issues, but assured the public that it would continue to refine AI technology through its contract with the Defense Department.
