Rules in favor of parents who want to opt their children out of LGBTQ lessons.
The justices of the Supreme Court released its decision on Friday stating that the Montgomery County Public Schools in Maryland violated religious liberties by refusing to allow parents to excuse their children from LGBTQ-related class instruction. The Maryland parents who brought the suit included Catholics, Muslims, and Russian Orthodox.
Justice Samuel Alito wrote for the majority, “We hold that the parents have shown that they are entitled to a preliminary injunction. A government burdens the religious exercise of parents when it requires them to submit their children to instruction that poses ‘a very real threat of undermining’ the religious beliefs and practices that the parents wish to instill.”
The justice highlighted that the “storybooks unmistakably convey a particular viewpoint about same-sex marriage and gender” and the school board “specifically encouraged teachers to reinforce this viewpoint and to reprimand any children who disagree. That goes far beyond mere ‘exposure.’”
President Donald Trump responded to the decision, stating that it was “a tremendous ruling for parents.“ He said, “They lost control of the schools, they lost control of their child, and this is a tremendous victory for parents. And I’m not surprised by it, but I am surprised that it went this far.”
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For the justices of the Supreme Court as they accept cases for the fall term during summer recess.
- For the president and education secretary as they seek to ensure religious liberty is upheld in government-funded schools.
