FDA Expands Approval for RSV Vaccine for Adults Under 60

Without a CDC director, the approval depends on the HHS secretary to endorse it.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the use of Moderna’s Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) vaccine for use in adults between the ages of 18 to 59. Previously the vaccine was only approved for use in adults 60 years and older.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) had previously recommended the vaccine for adults between the ages of 50 and 59 who have medical risks associated with the virus.

The CDC does not yet have a confirmed director, so the authorization would need to come from Health and Human Services Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., who has expressed skepticism about mRNA vaccine development and research and canceled over $750 million worth of contracts with Moderna that funded mRNA research.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For members of the Senate as they hold confirmation hearings for the president’s nominee, Susan Monarez, for CDC director.
  • For HHS Secretary Kennedy and FDA Commissioner Makary as they oversee approvals and authorizations of drugs, therapies, and vaccines.
