Passes measure aiming to force compliance with DHS officials
The House passed a measure that would remove Washington, D.C.’s bans preventing its government from sharing its residents’ immigration status information with officials from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). If passed by the Senate, this federal legislation would overturn the local legislation that supports Washington, D.C.’s “sanctuary city” policies.
“State and local governments must work with the Department of Homeland Security to share information on individuals they arrest. They must also honor lawful detainers,” House Oversight Chair James Comer said during the floor debate. “When they do not, Congress must act.”
On the other side of the debate, Representative Stephen Lynch argued that Congress should stop interfering with Washington’s self-governance, saying city officials should be left to set their own policing policies.

- For members of the Senate as they consider the bill that would require the District of Columbia’s local government to cooperate with federal immigration law enforcement.
- For Speaker Johnson and Majority Leader Thune to be led by the Lord as they preside over their respective chambers.
