VA Simplifies Access to Community Health Care for Veterans

Policy change eliminates second-doctor review, giving Veterans faster access to non-VA medical providers.

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) recently removed an administrative step to expedite Veterans’ access to non-VA healthcare providers. Previously, under the 2019 MISSION Act, Veterans could seek care outside the VA system if certain conditions were met, but those decisions required confirmation by a second VA physician.

Now, with the implementation of the Senator Elizabeth Dole 21st Century Veterans Healthcare and Benefits Improvement Act, that additional review has been eliminated—allowing eligible Veterans to access community care more efficiently.

“Now, we’re making it even easier for Veterans to get their health care when and where its most convenient for them. We are putting Veterans first at the department, and that means placing a premium on customer service and convenience. This important change will help us do just that,” said VA Secretary Doug Collins.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Secretary Collins to be prudent as he heads the Department of Veterans Affairs.
  • For VA personnel and officials as they seek to facilitate convenient care for veterans.
