Representative Gerry Connolly Dies After Battling Cancer

He was a nine-term member of Congress and stepped away from House leadership roles after the cancer returned.

U.S. Representative Gerry Connolly of Virginia passed away this week at the age of 75. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 2008 and was serving his ninth term at the time of his death.

His family announced, “It is with immense sadness that we share that our devoted and loving father, husband, brother, friend, and public servant, Congressman Gerald E. Connolly, passed away peacefully at his home this morning surrounded by family.”

Less than a month ago, Congressman Connolly stepped away from congressional leadership positions and announced he would not seek reelection due to the return of esophageal cancer after his original treatments six months earlier.

The House Rules Committee paused for a moment of silence in Representative Connolly’s honor Wednesday morning. Committee Chair Virginia Foxx of North Carolina said, “To stop and say a prayer for his family, please take some time.“

“Gerry was a fighter. His sharp mind, boundless energy, and deep commitment to the people of Northern Virginia made him a force to be reckoned with, whether on the Fairfax Board of Supervisors or in Congress,“ Senator Mark Warner of Virginia stated. “He met every challenge with tenacity and purpose, including his final battle with cancer, which he faced with courage, grace, and quiet dignity.“

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • That the Lord would comfort Congressman Connolly’s loved ones as they grieve his loss.
  • For members of Congress as they commemorate the life and service of their colleague.
