Former Supreme Court Justice David Souter Passes Away

He was a moderate in his legal interpretations during his 19-year tenure.

Former Supreme Court Justice David Souter died on Friday in his New Hampshire at the age of 85.

Chief Justice John Roberts said, “He will be greatly missed.” He stated that the former justice brought “uncommon wisdom and kindness to a lifetime of public service.”

President George H.W. Bush nominated Souter in 1990. Souter had served on the U.S. 1st Circuit Court of Appeals for a few months. Before that, he had been a justice on the New Hampshire Supreme Court. Souter never married.

In 2009, he became one of the youngest Supreme Court justices to retire, at age 69. After leaving the high court, Souter heard cases on the 1st Circuit Court of Appeals for over a decade.

Justice Sonia Sotomayor, who was nominated by President Obama to Souter’s vacated seat, stated, “A man of honor who served the Court with great distinction has passed away. Along with the Nation, I grieve.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • With gratitude for the life and service of former Justice Souter.
  • For the friends, loved ones, and colleagues of the former associate Supreme Court justice as they mourn his passing.
  • For the current justices of the Supreme Court to be led by God as they hear and decide cases.
