Education Secretary Announces Harvard Not Eligible for New Federal Grants

Under federal law, entities engaged in racial discrimination are not allowed to receive taxpayer dollars.

Education Secretary Linda McMahon sent a letter to Harvard this week informing university officials that the Ivy League school will no longer be eligible for new research grants from the government. Funding that was previously approved will not be affected.

A senior Education Department official told reporters that the school may become eligible for new grants if Harvard’s leadership can “demonstrate responsible management.”

The Education Department and Department of Health and Human Services recently launched an investigation into the Harvard Law Review over allegations that the journal was evaluating membership and publication based on race. Civil rights law does not allow federal funding to entities that engage in racial discrimination.

Acting Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Craig Trainor stated, “Title VI’s demands are clear: recipients of federal financial assistance may not discriminate on the basis of race, color, or national origin. No institution—no matter its pedigree, prestige, or wealth—is above the law. The Trump Administration will not allow Harvard, or any other recipients of federal funds, to trample on anyone’s civil rights.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Secretary McMahon and Education Department officials as they assess the alleged discrimination of the university.
  • For Acting Assistant Secretary Trainor as he oversees the Education Department’s Office of Civil Rights.
