House of Representatives Cancels August Recess

Will remain in session until a coronavirus relief bill is passed.

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer announced Friday that the House is canceling its traditional August recess, as negotiations over the next coronavirus relief legislation have reached an impasse. Congressman Hoyer said they would remain in session until a bill is reached.

Traditionally, members of Congress take the month of August to return to their home districts and conduct business there, including campaigning for the coming election. “We will not start the August district work period until we pass appropriate COVID-19 relief to meet the current health and economic crisis confronting our people and our country,” Hoyer said.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has not indicated what that body’s plans are for August.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said, “We are working around the clock to see if we can reach an agreement that’s good for the American people.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • That Congressional negotiators will be able to find the right compromise that will establish the best comprehensive relief legislation.
  • For members of Congress eager to return to their home districts during this election season.
