Senate Finance Committee Chair Calls for Chip Use Investigation

Russians using U.S.-made chips in facial recognition technology.

Chair of the Senate Finance Committee, Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon, called for President Biden’s administration to look into reports of Russian facial recognition utilizing U.S.-made computer chips in their manufacturing.

The senator said, “The administration should thoroughly investigate allegations that U.S. chips are being used in Russia’s facial recognition and surveillance regime and do what it takes to cut off the flow of sensitive technology to Putin and his cronies.”

The chips used for Moscow’s facial recognition system were made by Nvidia and Intel, both of which are companies based in the United States. Though both companies complied with U.S. exports and halted all shipments to Russia in March 2022, records show that third parties from foreign countries were independently selling the companies’ chips to Russia as late as October 2022.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Senator Wyden to seek God’s direction as he encourages the administration to investigate technology exports to Russia.
  • For the president and officials in his Cabinet as they consider the gains Russia is making with U.S.-made computer chips.
  • For Commerce Secretary Raimondo and U.S. Trade Representative Tai as they review third-party exports and access to U.S. technology.
