Transportation Secretary Speaks with Southwest Airlines CEO

He communicated expectations for commitments to rectify mass flight cancellations.

Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg spoke with the CEO of Southwest Airlines, Bob Jordan, earlier this week about the mass flight cancellations that occurred. Southwest canceled over 5,000 flights in 2 days, more than 60 percent of its entire schedule and far more than any other airline.

The Department of Transportation communicated that officials expect the company to “live up to the commitments” they promise their passengers in light of cancellations, including meal vouchers, refunds, and hotel accommodations. “Southwest, as all airlines, is also obligated to provide a cash refund for passengers whose flights were canceled and decided not to travel,” the department added. Secretary Buttigieg also said that if adequate steps were not taken by the company to address these cancellations, the transportation department will take action.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For wisdom for the transportation secretary as he seeks answers to the massive flight cancellations by Southwest.
  • For the leadership of Southwest Airlines as they work to resolve the issues that caused all the flight disruptions.
