Remember

You were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.   – 1 Corinthians 6:20

Some people seem to have gospel amnesia! The apostle Paul pastored and cultivated a church in the ancient city of Corinth around 55 AD. The city was a crossroad for traders with a diverse population and a pleasure-seeking culture. Many of its members were distracted by immaturity, instability, divisions, jealousy, envy, lawsuits, marital difficulties, sexual immorality, and the misuse and misunderstanding of spiritual gifts. You might recognize that the little church Paul loved is not so different from America’s church today!

The Corinthian church in those days and in that place did not remember the life to which they were called as children of God. Truly, they celebrated the forgiveness of Christ as a welcome entrance into the family of God and looked forward to that same grace as a comfort for their future exit from life on Earth. However, they were not remembering how God’s saving work in their life was to flow in and out and around every thought and action of each day.

No worldly knowledge ever replaces God’s living, breathing Spirit as your companion and His Word as your source of wisdom. As a redeemed child of God, His resurrection power is available to you in every area of your life: “Just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life” (Romans 6:4).

As in the days of the Corinthians, with every worldly thing right outside your door, remember who you are as you encounter it! Pray for God’s church in America to be strengthened by a new dedication to His word and His Spirit today.

Today’s Verse: 1 Corinthians 6:20

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, 5 who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 6 In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, 7 so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
