In the News…

The American Data Privacy and Protection Act received committee approval in the summer with bipartisan support but has since stalled in the House of Representatives. The legislation would create a comprehensive national privacy law to protect consumer data and prohibit discrimination based on personal information.

The bill also generally prohibits the transfer of personal data without the express approval of the consumer, and creates further restrictions on personal data collection for children

A strong proponent of the bill, Representative Suzan DelBene, said in a statement,  “Early on, New Dems [the New Democrat Coalition]  worked to tackle the challenges and embrace the opportunities of the 21st century. Our members have also prioritized advancing policies that make privacy the default and put people in control of their own information.”

She urged bipartisan support and “agreement on this critical issue” and sending a strong national privacy bill to the president’s desk.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi has come out in opposition to the bill, so it may never see a floor vote.
