Yellowstone National Park Closed Due to Flooding

Communities evacuated and entrances closed during floods.

For the first time in 34 years, the National Park Service (NPS) announced the total closure of Yellowstone National Park this week, effective immediately. A spike in temperature over the weekend caused late-winter snow to melt rapidly, creating catastrophic flooding and mudslides all around the area. NPS personnel evacuated the park, closed off all 5 points of entry, and is now working with state officials to help local communities also affected by the waters.

“We will not know the timing of the park’s reopening until flood waters subside and we’re able to assess the damage throughout the park,” the park superintendent, Cam Sholly, stated. “I appreciate the efforts of the Yellowstone team and partners to safely evacuate areas of the park and of our gateway community partners who are helping us through this major event.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • That NPS Director Sams would seek God’s guidance on how to handle the flooding.
  • For Yellowstone National Park officials as they deal with the park closure.
  • For safety for inhabitants of Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho as the flooding occurs in those states.
