Generations

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.  – Jeremiah 29:11

How much confidence do you have in the next generation? It is more than a casual observation that each generation looks at the one following as possibly less capable than themselves and, more humorously, genuinely dislikes their music!   Generational tension drives cultures forward in change, sometimes for the better, and other times merely to repeat past failures.

God’s Word gives believers hope encompassing every generation and across all time: “For I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me, declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done, my counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all my purpose” (Isaiah 46:9-10).

God’s plan for humanity is right on track! Nations will come and go and people in authority will develop ideas. Some will succeed, some will fail but ultimately God will rescue His people from the grip of sin, not because they come up with good social programs but because Christ’s sacrifice was sufficient to buy peace for humankind: “He reconciled to himself all things, whether on Earth or in Heaven, making peace by the blood of His cross” (Colossians 1:20).

The peace of Christ is sufficient for every generation granting access to great hope in knowing God will put an end to human distress and welcome His followers into His joyful kingdom: “He will swallow up death forever; and the Lord God will wipe away tears from all faces” (Isaiah 25:8). Pray for the next generation of leaders in America to find hope in God’s plan for salvation today.

Recommended for further reading: Psalm 145:4-8

One generation shall commend your works to another,
and shall declare your mighty acts.
5 On the glorious splendor of your majesty,
and on your wondrous works, I will meditate.
6 They shall speak of the might of your awesome deeds,
and I will declare your greatness.
7 They shall pour forth the fame of your abundant goodness
and shall sing aloud of your righteousness.

8 The Lord is gracious and merciful,
slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
