Senate Bill Averts Shut Down

Funding extended through December 3.

The Senate passed a bill on Thursday to keep the government funded through December 3. The House is expected to pass the extension also, getting the measure to the president for his signature before midnight tonight. The bill did not include a hike in or suspension of the debt limit.

The continuing resolution includes supplemental funds to help resettle vetted Afghan refugees and hurricane recovery.

The Senate 65-35 vote helps to avert one crisis, but only delays another as the political parties dig in on a dispute over how to raise the government’s borrowing cap before the U.S. risks a default.

The work to keep the government open and running is a backdrop for the struggle to get President Biden’s top domestic priorities passed, including a bipartisan $1 trillion infrastructure bill at risk of stalling in the House.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For wisdom for members of Congress as they consider the spending bills.
  • That legislators will be discerning as they vote on whether or not to suspend or increase the nation’s debt limit.
  • For the Senate to work together in the best interests of the nation.
