The Way of Faithfulness

The Lord is faithful. He will establish you and guard you against the evil one. – 2 Thessalonians 3:3

Faithfulness is a big deal to the Lord. Faithfulness and its similes (loyalty, steadfastness, trustworthiness) are mentioned in the Bible hundreds of times. From Genesis to Revelation people, such as Abraham’s servant who sought a wife for Isaac or the New Testament apostles, testified of the Lord’s faithfulness.

The Lord also rewards the faithfulness of His people. Today’s verse shows both aspects, the Lord being faithful and the Lord rewarding those who are faithful to Him. He vows to establish and guard His faithful ones against the evil one. Some examples of people whom the Lord rewarded for their faithfulness are Job, Joseph, Daniel, Naomi, Ruth, and Hannah. And of course, many rewards are reserved in Heaven.

What does faithfulness to the Lord look like? Faithfulness is a devotion that will not quit no matter what. Salvation comes through faith in the sacrifice and resurrection of the Lord Jesus. Faithfulness shows commitment to God through doing His will, praying, being committed to fellow Christians, dedicating time and resources to the gospel and ministry, and spending time studying the Bible and seeking ways to put it into practice. Faithfulness begins inwardly with a love for the Lord and others and extends outwardly in the things you do each day.

As you live your life in faithfulness to the Lord, know that He establishes you and guards you against the enemy. Pray for leaders and citizens of the United States to learn to be faithful to God. Praise Him for His promise to support and protect His faithful people.

Fret not yourself because of evildoers;
    be not envious of wrongdoers!
For they will soon fade like the grass
    and wither like the green herb.
Trust in the Lord, and do good;
    dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness.
Delight yourself in the Lord,
    and he will give you the desires of your heart.
Commit your way to the Lord;
    trust in him, and he will act.
He will bring forth your righteousness as the light,
    and your justice as the noonday.
Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him;
    fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way,
    over the man who carries out evil devices!
