Not the Shortest Path

In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. – Proverbs 3:6

King Solomon made it very clear that a person who is wise in his own eyes will not do well: “Whoever trusts in his own mind is a fool” (Proverbs 28:26). Today’s verse is an encouragement to live in the light of the fear of the Lord, reliance on God in everything… something that is unnatural to the human mind. And yet, if you acknowledge Him, recognize His rights and authority in your life, you can experience an intimate relationship with Him that impacts every area of your life.

Acknowledging God in all your ways means you have made an entirely exhaustive and exclusive commitment… you have submitted your life to the Creator God who knows you best. However, it is not just acknowledgment of the Lord, but trusting in Him, that makes a difference. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding” (Proverbs 3:5). It is the Lord who will make your path continually progress to the goal that He has designed for you to accomplish. An old Portuguese proverb states that “God writes straight with crooked lines.” The Lord will direct your way, not necessarily by the shortest path, but by the one that fulfills His plan.

There will always be those in government leadership who fail to acknowledge that God has the best plans for them and for this nation. Whenever you see them, remember to follow God’s instruction to pray for hearts to be changed. Pray also for their lives to be committed to the only One who can make straight the path. Then lean on the Lord for peace, guidance, strength, and direction as you seek to travel where He wills.

My son, do not forget my teaching,
    but let your heart keep my commandments,
for length of days and years of life
    and peace they will add to you.

Let not steadfast love and faithfulness forsake you;
    bind them around your neck;
    write them on the tablet of your heart.
So you will find favor and good success
    in the sight of God and man.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
    and do not lean on your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge him,
    and he will make straight your paths.
Be not wise in your own eyes;
    fear the Lord, and turn away from evil.
It will be healing to your flesh
    and refreshment to your bones.
