President Issues Declaration of Freedom in Space and FAA Proposes Space Regulations

Both measures are intended to advance U.S. space travel and innovation.

President Donald Trump issued a proclamation regarding America’s space exploration aspirations. He pledged in the American Declaration of Freedom in Space that the U.S. would lead space exploration, development, use, and settlement throughout the solar system. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) also announced four new regulations to streamline commercial space launch and reentry. The agency intends the new regulations to decrease regulatory burdens, while also enhancing operational flexibility without having to compromise safety standards.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy stated, “President Trump is supercharging America’s booming commercial space industry making it more innovative and safer than ever before. That includes getting rid of the outdated rules that hold innovators back, recruiting the best and brightest aerospace engineers, and unleashing American space dominance while never compromising on safety.”

The FAA is planning a larger overhaul of its licensing framework in 2027 to support the growth of commercial space travel and the anticipated number of 1,000 launches per year by 2030.
