Federal Election Commission Targeted in Cyberattack

The FEC reported on Wednesday, “The electronic filing system is available. A fix has been implemented, and we are monitoring the results.”

Just one week ahead of the midterm elections, the Federal Election Commission (FEC) was targeted by hacking attempts. The FEC took its electronic filing system offline late Monday after the attempted cyberattacks. The campaign-finance transparency system accepts disclosures on fundraising and spending in individual election races ahead of an election.

An FEC spokesperson said that while the system was offline, the website search for FEC reports was “not affected.” The commission reported on Wednesday, “The electronic filing system is available. A fix has been implemented, and we are monitoring the results.”

The outage prevented political parties, committees, and candidates from electronically filing 24-hour and 48-hour spending reports. The commission administers and enforces campaign finance laws. It does not participate in administering elections.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Acting Chair Broussard as she oversees the Federal Election Commission.
  • For Commissioner Lindenbaum as she serves on the FEC and supports campaign finance transparency.
  • For officials in the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency and the FBI as they investigate the cyberattack.
