CBP Delays Rule Restricting Imported Pharmaceuticals and Prescription Drugs

Federal legislators have urged the agency to abandon the rule entirely.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced it will delay the implementation of a rule that would restrict imported prescription drugs for 90 days. The rule introduces a stricter import process for prescription drugs, including new documentation requirements. Under the new regulation, CBP may refuse acceptance of packages from foreign pharmacies if the medications are available in the United States.

Over 70 members of Congress have signed letters to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), CBP, and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) requesting that the rule be abandoned, due to the negative impact it could have on tens of millions of Americans who rely on the lower prices of the imported drugs.

“CBP is focused on securing our borders and using advance data to identify threats in international mail before they reach American communities,” Executive Assistant Commissioner of the CBP Office of Trade Susan Thomas stated. “The agency is committed to bringing international mail entry procedures into parity with informal entry procedures across all other cargo modes while setting a global standard for modern customs controls in the international mail movement.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Executive Assistant Commissioner Thomas as she oversees the security of mail entering the U.S.
  • For the members of Congress as they advocate for Americans seeking more affordable prescription drugs.
  • For the leaders of DHS, CBP, and HHS as they consider the impact of the drug import restrictions.
