Federal Judges Rules DOJ Lacks Authority to Check Voter Lists Against Immigration Database

The Justice Department has requested voter rolls from states to verify citizenship against the SAVE system.

U.S. District Judge Sparkle Sooknanan ruled that the Department of Justice does not have the authority to verify the citizenship of voters listed on state voter rolls. The department has been checking registered voters on state lists against the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) database and notifying states to remove noncitizens who are illegally registered to vote.

“The challenged policy represents the federal government’s attempt to decide who gets to vote,” Judge Sooknanan said. “But Congress has left that authority where our Constitution has always placed it: with the states.”

The judge stated that the Justice Department “cannot run roughshod over longstanding laws that were carefully crafted to protect the rights of the American people.”

The Supreme Court previously paused a ruling by Judge Sooknanan that blocked the federal government from verifying voters’ citizenship using an expanded version of the SAVE system.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For federal judges as they hear constitutional challenges to the policies and procedures of the president’s administration.
  • For the justices of the Supreme Court as they consider appeals of the stays and injunctions of lower court rulings.
  • For wisdom for President Trump and Attorney General Blanche as they seek to ensure that noncitizens are not voting unlawfully in federal elections.
