Nine universities are under investigation for exploiting J-1 visas to employ foreign students to save money.
Vice President JD Vance and Labor Department Inspector General Anthony D’Esposito announced an investigation into nine U.S. universities on the grounds of suspected visa fraud. The universities are suspected of exploiting the J-1 visa program that allows non-U.S. citizens to temporarily study and conduct research in the U.S.
Universities under investigation are Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Brown, the University of Pittsburgh, the University of California, Davis, the California Institute of Technology, Arizona State University, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Inspector General D’Esposito stated, “We will investigate whether foreign influence, improper financial relationships, or visa abuse are compromising federally funded research. If an American university is breaking the law to save $1 while exposing American research to a foreign adversary, that is not academic excellence. It’s institutional betrayal.”
He continued, “American taxpayers send billions of dollars to these universities to support research and innovation. They deserve to know where that money is going, and whether it’s being used lawfully.”
