Secretary McMahon said, “It is more important than ever for students to learn and understand the devastating human consequences of communist and socialist regimes.”
Ahead of the 10th U.S. National Day for the Victims of Communism on November 7, U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon released a Dear Colleague letter to education administrators and teachers, urging schools to strengthen instruction on the dangers and history of communism and socialism, ensuring that students realize the principles of freedom that are the foundation of the U.S. constitutional republic. Arkansas, Arizona, Florida, and Tennessee already incorporate instruction on the history and perils of communism into their school curricula.
“At a time when young Americans are expressing positive impressions of socialism in record numbers, it is more important than ever for students to learn and understand the devastating human consequences of communist and socialist regimes,” said Secretary McMahon.
“We must ensure the next generation values freedom, individual liberty, and the constitutional principles that have made America the greatest nation in the world – otherwise, we risk repeating the tragedies of the past,” she added.
On November 7, the U.S. will remember the more than 100 million people who have died under communist regimes.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For discernment for Secretary McMahon as she promotes instruction on the historic outcomes of communism and socialism.
- For U.S. education officials to be prudent in their advocacy for comparative learning regarding socialism, totalitarianism, and liberty.
