CDC, HHS, and State Department Monitor Report of “Suspected Pneumonic Plague“ Death in Russia

President Trump stated the U.S. would help Russia “as much as we can.”

The U.S. State Department, Department of Health and Human Services, and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are monitoring the situation in Russia after the death of a lab worker two days after a test tube containing live bacteria of an unspecified form of plague was broken. A media outlet in Moscow stated that almost 200 people in Siberia’s Irkutsk Oblast were under medical observation and the lab facility was under lockdown.

HHS Press Secretary for the Department of Health and Human Services Emily Hillard said, “CDC is monitoring the situation closely with the State Department and our other interagency partners. The safety and security of U.S. citizens is our highest priority.”

A spokesman from the State Department said, “Plague is a known disease and is treatable with common antibiotics, especially when treatment starts early. Cases occur naturally in many parts of the world.” The State Department has Russia at a “Level 4: Do Not Travel” for Americans.

President Trump said that the U.S. would help Russia “as much as we can.” He added that the illness used to be easier to control, but that “microbes and the germs have gotten stronger.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For wisdom for U.S. officials as they monitor the circumstances in Russia.
  • For President Trump to be discerning in his offer to assist Russia with the situation.
  • For Secretaries Rubio and Kennedy as they gather additional information and for Moscow to be transparent in providing it.
