A Nor’easter is also threatening the New England region.
The National Hurricane Center reported that tropical storm Nolo strengthened to hurricane strength as it traveled northwest toward the Hawaiian Islands. While forecasts predict that the eye of the storm will remain south of the Big Island, severe weather conditions are expected to significantly impact the state, with strong winds and up to 30 inches of rain.
The National Hurricane Center warned, “Life-threatening flash flooding possible and damaging waves likely on the Big Island of Hawaii over the weekend.” A tropical storm warning was issued for Hawaii County, and a tropical storm watch was issued for the islands of Maui County. A hurricane watch is also in effect for Hawaii County.
The state is still recovering from Hurricane Lowell three weeks ago, and officials closed schools and county offices across the island late this week.
The National Weather Service also forecast a nor’easter hitting the New England area this weekend. Boston, Massachusetts, began experiencing wind and rain from the storm system. The coastlines along New Jersey, parts of New York, and Massachusetts have been placed under watches or warnings.
