President Trump signed the deal on Tuesday with the Prime Ministers of Denmark and Greenland.
President Donald Trump, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, and Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen signed a trilateral agreement on Tuesday at the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The deal amends and supplements previous agreements going back to 1951.
The agreement is a permanent commitment for Arctic security to remain under the collective watch of NATO, rather than having the United States or Denmark be in sole charge of the region. The agreement expands the U.S. military presence on the island nation, and allows for the possible independence of Greenland at a future date.
In addition to allowing the updating and expansion of the existing Pituffik Space Base, the United States will establish defense areas at Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig.
