Senate Majority Leader John Thune has set a procedural vote today on the Ratepayer Protection Act, which the House of Representatives passed earlier this month by an overwhelming bipartisan margin.
Introduced by Representatives Gabe Evans of Colorado and Kathy Castor of Florida, the legislation would amend the Public Utility Regulatory Policies Act of 1978 (PURPA) to allow state regulators to require large-load utility customers, such as data centers, to cover the costs of the generation, transmission, and distribution upgrades to serve their energy needs.
Senator Jon Husted of Ohio attempted to fast-track the bill last week, but Senator Martin Heinrich of New Mexico blocked the effort.
The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee’s Subcommittee on Disaster Management, District of Columbia, and Census, chaired by Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri, is holding hearings to examine rogue AI, focusing on securing the homeland against AI agents.
