On Tuesday, President Donald Trump remembered the victims and first responders of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks ahead of the 25th anniversary of the tragedy. The president spoke at the White House Ellipse as part of the Towers to Tunnels nationwide “Steel Across America“ tour that features a 21-foot, 16,900-pound steel beam recovered from the World Trade Center’s South Tower.
“When we see this steel, we’re reminded that no matter what threat or challenge comes our way, America will fight, America will endure, and America will prevail,” President Trump said. “Nothing can keep our country down — and our country is stronger today than it’s ever been before.”
The president presented the Presidential Medal of Freedom to members of Welles Crowther’s family. The stock market trader, who was trained as a volunteer firefighter, had tied a red bandana around his face to guide people out of the South Tower before perishing in its collapse.
