The split decision stayed the injunction against the above-ground portion of the construction project.
The Supreme Court paused the injunction of a district judge against the White House ballroom construction project on Monday. The high court granted the request of President Donald Trump’s administration to allow the above-ground portion of construction to continue.
Stating that the plaintiff, a private nonprofit, likely lacks legal grounds to challenge the project, the Supreme Court decision did not address the legality of the White House project.
The district judge issued a block on the continuation of the ballroom’s construction above ground in March, but allowed the below-ground security projects to proceed. The circuit court upheld the lower court’s injunction. The block on construction would have gone into effect August 21 but for Chief Justice John Roberts’ 10-day administrative stay.
President Donald Trump responded to the Supreme Court decision, stating, “I am pleased to report that the United States Supreme Court has just ruled in favor of the Ballroom/Military Complex being built without any further contingency, doubt, or threat.”
He added, “This Building will be one of the Greatest ever constructed in Washington, D.C. When completed in the Summer of 2028, the magnificent Ballroom and Military Complex will be something that the entire Country is very proud of.”
