As part of National Fentanyl Prevention and Awareness Day last week, the White House reported that deaths connected to fentanyl decreased 22 percent in 2025. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released data showing that synthetic opioid deaths dropped from nearly 49,000 in 2024 to just over 38,000 in 2025. Total drug overdoses in the same timeframe went from more than 81,000 to just under 70,000, a 14 percent decrease.
“President Trump targeted cartels who were profiting off the death of Americans, secured our border to stop Fentanyl and other illicit drugs from flowing into our communities and jump-started ICE to arrest illegal alien fentanyl traffickers,” White House spokeswoman Lauren Bis stated. “These policies delivered a 22% decline in opioid deaths in a single year. Thanks to President Trump, America is finally winning the fight against fentanyl.”
The White House also highlighted the decline in fentanyl seizures in fiscal year 2025, which dropped 45 percent compared to 2024. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has found through testing seized fentanyl pills that, while 76 percent contained a lethal dose in 2023, 29 percent of the pills are now that potent.
